The leader of a secretive German colony in southern Chile who has eluded Chilean authorities for almost a decade was arrested on Thursday in neighbouring Argentina, according to a Chilean judge.
Chile's state television and other media reported that Paul Schaffer was arrested near the Argentine capital of Buenos Aires.
Judge Joaquin Billard confirmed the report, saying Schaffer was arrested on a warrant on human rights charges.
Schaffer had also been indicted in absentia on charges of sexually abusing 26 children in Colonia Dignidad, the secretive German enclave he founded in the early 1960s in Chile.
Police raided the enclave, 300 kilometres (185 miles) south of Santiago, several times over the past few years, but failed to find Schaffer.
While the sexual abuse charges were the most serious ones he faces, Schaffer was finally arrested on a warrant issued by Billard in connection with the disappearance of a dissident at the colony in the early years of 1973-90 dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet.
Schaffer and other leaders of the colony were repeatedly accused in Chile and abroad of a number of human rights abuses, including holding many of the nearly 350 members of the enclave against their will and of allowing the colony to be used as a torture and execution centre by Pinochet''s security services.
Colony leaders angrily deny the accusations, calling them a communist-inspired smear campaign.
